Joseph DeWitt

Obituary of Joseph C. DeWitt

Joseph C. DeWitt, age 86, of King of Prussia, PA passed away on Wednesday, December 24, 2025.

He was born in Philadelphia, PA on November 23, 1939, the son of the late William and Barbara (Pfieffer) DeWitt.

Joe has been living in King of Prussia since 1978.  He had lived prior in North Wildwood for 5 years, where he was a lifeguard by day and a Bartender at Moore's Inlet by night. He was a member of the former St. Augustine’s RC Church of Bridgeport, PA.

His first career was as a Bartender, working at the Holiday Inn, The Manayunk Club, where he was a founding member, and finally at the Phillies Clubhouse.  He then had a career selling franchises, most notably Maaco, Hometown Auto and Tower Cleaning.  In addition to being the National Franchise Director for Maaco, he owned a Maaco shop himself.

He liked to collect and restore cars.  He built his own dune buggy which he like to joy ride through Valley Forge Park with his sons, nieces and nephews.  He also resecured from the scrap heap and fully restored a 1968 Pontiac LeMans which his boys nicknamed "Stupid".

Joe loved spending time at the beach, especially Wildwood, Sea Isle City and Myrtle Beach.

Joe enjoyed entertaining family and friends around his pool.  They would enjoy his masterfully made cocktails, especially Pina Coladas.  Everyone was welcome in his home.  He also enjoyed debate (being the contrarian) and loved TV and cinema.

He was a Freemason with the Williamson-Corinthian Lodge F&AM.

He honorably served in the U.S. Army Reserves.

He was the husband of the late Elizabeth Ann (Scanlon) DeWitt.

He is survived by two sons, Christopher DeWitt and Timothy DeWitt, both of King of Prussia, PA; sister, Margaret (Rick) Homa of Habersham County, GA; and two sisters in-law, Agnes DeWitt, and Terry DeWitt.  He is also survived by two grandchildren, Oliver Joseph and Jack Killian DeWitt; as well as many nieces and nephews and countless honorary children.

Along with his wife and parents, he was preceded in death by four siblings, William, Barbara "Sis", John and Thomas; and son in-law, Ian F. Henline-DeWitt.

The family will hold a celebration of life at a later date.
