Joseph A. Byrnes
Joseph A. Byrnes, 82, passed away on January 16, 2026. He was born on September 29, 1943, in Norristown, Pennsylvania, to Robert Emmett Byrnes and Elizabeth Byrnes (née Hamilton).
He is survived by his wife Virginia (Luongo) and their precious pup Mia. They reside in the greater Norristown area.
Survivors include his five children: Kelly (Raymond) Trusdell of Sanatoga, Pa; Kimberley Moore of Falling Waters, WV; Karen (John) Morton of West Chester, Pa; Kathryn Byrnes of Blandon, Pa; and Kristina (David) Reilly of Little River, SC. He is also survived by his sisters, Kathleen Byrnes of Phoenixville, Pa and Mary Haines of Pottstown, Pa, Also many beloved nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Joseph was the proud grandfather of 21 grandchildren: Joseph, Blake, Robert, Ashley, Reagan, Blaine, Patrick, Hannah, Corey, Molly, Caitlyn, Tiffany, Shannon, Angela, Alexander, Kaleigh, Ivie, Madison, David, Cristina, and Adriana. He was also blessed with 11 great-grandchildren, all of whom he loved and cherished deeply.
Joseph was preceded in death by his parents; his son, Joseph P. Byrnes; his granddaughter, Caitlyn Stoy; and his brother, Robert Byrnes.
Joseph attended the Norristown Area School District and was a member of Saint Patrick’s Catholic Church in Norristown during his youth. In his younger years, he worked as an orderly at Norristown State Hospital and Alan Wood Steel Co.
In 1967, Joseph began a distinguished career with the Norristown Police Department, where he served for 30 years before retiring. Following his retirement, he continued his commitment to public service, serving as President of West Norriton Council and as a member of the Montgomery County Correctional Facility Prison Board of Inspectors.
Joseph was an active member of the Fraternal Order of Police Lodge #31 and the National Fraternal Order of Police, attending conferences across the United States. In 1993, he became deeply involved with the Montgomery County Police Officers Memorial Fund, where he proudly served as President of the Board, taking great love and care in preserving the memory of fallen officers.
Joseph A. Byrnes will be remembered with love, respect, and gratitude for his service, leadership, sense of humor and his devotion to his family and community.
His Memorial Mass will be held Thursday, January 22, 2026 at 10:30 AM from Visitation B.V.M. RC Church, 196 North Trooper Road, Norristown, PA.
Friends may call on Thursday, January 22, 2026 from 9:00 AM to 10:15 AM at the church.
Interment will take place at a later date in Riverside Cemetery Co., West Norriton, Pa.
