James E. Lewis Obituary
James E. Lewis, 72, of Norristown, passed away surrounded by the love of his family on May 19, 2026, in Philadelphia.
Jim was born in Camden, New Jersey, to Janet (née Rice) Lewis and James J. Lewis Jr., on December 31, 1953. He attended Bishop Kenrick High School and graduated in 1971. He earned his undergraduate degree from the University of Notre Dame in 1975 and later a master’s degree from West Chester University. He worked as a Homeless Student Liaison and Truancy Officer for the Norristown Area School District, dedicating much of his professional life to supporting students and families with compassion and care.
Jim enjoyed long-distance running, hiking, gardening, cycling, caring for animals, and officiating baseball, softball, and basketball games throughout southeastern Pennsylvania. Widely respected as a Little League and high school umpire and referee, he was admired for his fairness, integrity, and commitment to youth athletics. A faithful parishioner and lead lector at St. Patrick Catholic Church, Jim lived a life grounded in faith, service, and generosity. He was also a longtime supporter of Laurel House and the Patrician Society, causes that reflected his lifelong dedication to helping others with dignity and compassion.
Jim is survived by his wife, Denise (née Currier) Lewis of Norristown; his children, Daniel Lewis, James I. Lewis (Alycia Monaco), and Robert Lewis (Emily Cerwonka); his grandchildren, Carmen Lewis and Vera Lewis; and his sister, Kathleen Costello (née Lewis) and her husband, William Costello. He is preceded in death by his parents, Janet (née Rice) Lewis and James J. Lewis Jr.
His Funeral services will be held at St. Patrick Catholic Church, 714 DeKalb St, Norristown, PA 19401, on Tuesday, May 26th with a viewing at 9:30 a.m. to 10:45AM at the church followed by the Holy Mass with Reverend Fr. Cesar Izaguirre officiating at 11:00 AM at St. Patrick's Church.
Burial will follow at St. Patrick's Cemetery, 2400 DeKalb St, Norristown, PA 19401.
Memorial donations may be made to Laurel House or the Patrician Society in Jim’s memory. The family wishes to extend their heartfelt gratitude to all those who cared for and supported Jim and his loved ones during his final days. Jim will be remembered for his kindness, steady presence, sense of fairness, and unwavering devotion to his family, faith, and community. His legacy of service and compassion will endure in all who knew and loved him.
