Obituary of Reece M. Whitley

Reece M. Whitley, age 88, of West Norriton, PA passed away on Thursday, October 17, 2024 at his home.

Born in Charlotte, North Carolina on May 5, 1936; son of the late Charles LeRoy Whitley and the late Bertha Mae (Long) Whitley.

Reece has been living in West Norriton since 1980 and formerly of Harrisonburg, VA.  He was a faithful member of Norriton Presbyterian Church and worked as the sexton for many years at the church.

Reece was a talented athlete and a graduate of the University of Virginia, where he played football and baseball and met the love of his life, Betty, and was also the quarterback coach for the Virginia Cavaliers football team for a year.

Reece honorably served in the U.S. Army and had a long career as a Health and Physical Education teacher at Plymouth Whitemarsh High School, where he also coached football and baseball.  He enjoyed playing golf, watching football and baseball, especially the Virginia Cavaliers and Philadelphia Phillies.   He loved doing crossword puzzles and going out to breakfast with friends and family.  Reece was a compassionate, caring friend, father and grandfather who would give a helping hand to anyone.  Reece loved his family dearly and treasured the time spent at family gatherings. 

Reece will be sadly missed.  He was the husband of the late Betty M. (Hinkle) Whitley.  He is survived by his daughter, Theresa, and her husband, Christopher Campbell, of Salisbury, MD; son, Michael, and his wife, Leticia Whitley, of West Norriton, PA; five grandchildren Tarra, John, Scott, Mark and Lauren; and six great-grandchildren Colin, John Reece, Jaxen, Kiera, Finnegan and Amelia.

Along with his wife and parents, he was preceded in death by nine siblings. 

His Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, October 26, 2024 at 10:30 AM from the Norriton Presbyterian Church, 608 North Trooper Road, Norristown, PA 19403.  Relatives and friends are invited to the visitation on Saturday morning from 9:00 AM to 10:15 AM with service to follow at 10:30AM at the Church.

Interment will take place at a later date in Washington Crossing National Cemetery, Newtown, PA.  

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in his name to Norriton Presbyterian Church, 608 North Trooper Road, Norristown, PA 19403.
