He participated in the Boy Scouts of American at St. Mark's Lutheran Church in Conshohocken, Pa. Floyd's first job was delivering newspapers. He was later employed (starting in 1942) at the John Wood Co. in Conshohocken. His hobbies included horseback riding at Cedar Heights Stables, hunting small game and fishing. Floyd entered the U.S. Navy in 1943 for basic training at the Sampson Naval Station, NY. He proceeded to Boston and the shakedown training on the U.S.S. Sigourney (DD643). They then departed through the Panama Canal to the West Coast and the Commander Destroyer Fleet. His ship left San Diego, CA (October 1943), for the South pacific. His wartime activities in that theater included many landings: Bougainville, Tarawa, Saipan, Leyte, and Okinawa. His full record with the Sigourney ended with dry-docking operations in South Carolina. Floyd was discharged from the Navy in December 1946. After World War II, he learned how to dance at Arthur Murray Dance School as well as to ice skate. He worked with the Pennsylvania Railroad/Conrail until retirement in 1989. Floyd was also a lifetime member of the American Legion.
