Obituary of Edwin P. Adkins

Adkins, Dr. Edwin P., of Audubon, died at his residence in Shannondell of Valley Forge on August 13, 2014. Dr. Adkins was born on November 11, 1916 in Midkiff, West Virginia, a son of the late Roy D. and Bertie (Payne) Adkins. He was 97. During World War II, Dr. Adkins served in the US Navy as a communications officer on LST 502 and participated in the the 1st wave of the D Day invasion on Omaha Beach. He earned his doctorate in history at Ohio State University. He was a lifelong educator both in the classroom and in administration. For 16 years he was the Vice President of Research and Development at Temple University in Philadelphia. Dr. Adkins was active in the Delaware Valley Fern and Wildflower Society of the Philadelphia Horticultural Society. He was an avid gardener who raised both vegetables and roses. Along with his late wife, he traveled extensively in the United States and Europe. During his time at Shannondell , he enjoyed its many cultural activities with the friends he made there. He was a member of the Shannondell Travel Billiards Team and loved the tournaments. Dr. Adkins spent his happiest times at family gatherings with his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. Dr. Adkins was the widower of Henrietta (Folmar) Adkins who died in 2009. He is survived by his beloved friend, Alice Blake Simonson; by his children, Linda Lea Horoho (Charles) of Collegeville and Dana Edwin Adkins (Lucy) of Virginia. Also surviving are his grandchildren, Charles Robertson (Sue), Brian Horoho (Michelle), Dr. Dana E. Adkins, Jr., Nancy Lin Care (Allan), and James Adkins; and by 11 great-grandchildren. Relatives and friends are invited to attend his Funeral Service, Saturday, August 23, 10 AM at the Moore, Snear, & Ruggiero Funeral Home, 19 E. Germantown Pk., E. Norriton. Officiating will be Rev. Ted Mingle, senior pastor of Lower Providence Presbyterian Church. A visitation will be held at 9 AM Saturday at the funeral home. Interment will be in Whitemarsh Memorial Park.
