I met Joseph McCabe Walker mid-way through elementary school in West Philadelphia. We were in the same gouping in our four West Catholic HS years. Two HS memories, of many, that formed my respect for Joe are these: 1) In our freshman year, a musical was performed and one of the acts involved 4 boys, including Joe, dressed in bunny costumes, singing and dancing. Sitting there, at 14, watching the performance, I knew I lacked the courage to do something like that. Joe didn’t. 2) I had a meal at Joe’s house with his Mother and older brother Harry. This was during the Army-McCarthy hearings and was the main topic of conversation among the Walker family. I was completely uninformed and could contribute nothing but started watching and learning and would talk more with Joe about it in the few weeks remaining of our HS time together.
Fifty years later, at reunions, Joe and I would share stories about our respective naval officers years along with other topics. Joe was still the intelligent, easy-to-be-with and delightful person I remembered from my youth. I respected him greatly, enjoyed his easy laugh, and am grateful I had the opportunity to re-connect with Joe later in our lives. Thanks, Joe.

To the Walker Family, please accept my sincerest sympathies over the loss of your beloved, Joseph. Our loving Creator knows how hard this is on you. We are told at Ezekiel 18:32 “I do not take any pleasure in the death of anyone, declares the Sovereign Lord. Please take comfort that Joseph has a hope to come back to be more vibrant than ever when resurrected into a promised paradise earth. (John 5:28; Psalms 37:29).
May your fond memories give you comfort during this most difficult time. For more information please visit jw.org.
Sorrowfully yours,
Stephanie
