I did not cruise with Dale, but often flew with him. I think in transitioning from the UH-2A/B to the C and D models. He was a quick study and a very good helicopter pilot.
More importantly, he was a fine officer and a fun man to be around. I do not recall a frown on Dale's face around the squadron.
And I am so thankful that he was instrumental in the HC-2 reunions. Those two re-unions were all the more enjoyable because of Dale.
I did not know all the things about him as stated in his obituary, but I am not surprised. All of those things made up Dale and who he was.
He will be missed greatly by his shipmates and squadron mates.

Mickey, my deepest sympathy to you & your family. Dale & I shared the Naval aviation experience at NASs Lakehurst & Willow Grove, primarily as reserve pilots in HS-75. After an extensive hiatus, we reconnected via a couple of recent reunions. It occasioned a reminder of what was so impactful about Dale; he was a presence without being “on”, energetic without being a “type A”, warm, gregarious, and an engaging storyteller (as my wife reminded me); in sum, most extraordinarily and genuinely himself. In navy parlance, throughout our squadron years, he continued to “pass his attitude check”. I’m sure, even in the face of the sickness he had to endure, he continued to do so.
As I approach retirement, although at an unusually slow “max endurance” pace, I think it’s a tic we shared, based on some recent “grapevine” updates. Perhaps it helps to explain why Dale had indicated a few times he wanted to come north to attend my belated own. But only somewhat, because I feel sure that the overarching truth was that Dale was being true, not only to our shared Navy tradition, but to his roots, to himself, to a tradition of “family”. I am honored to have been blessed as such, as I’m sure so many others have as well. God will bless Captain Dale Sokel. His “presence”, his memory will long linger.

Mickey, I was shocked to hear of Dales's passing. I can only say that I counted Dale as one of my closest Navy friends. He was a truelly well respected man, husband, Naval Officer, Pilot, father, brother and friend. I was planning on attending the services on Friday, but just last night I was asked to attend a business meeting with the owners of a new business opportunity opening in Philly. I will do my very best to make it. I really appreciate your understanding. Please accept my condolences. I will call you next week.
My prayers for Dale, you and your family will continue. Mickey know that Carol and I always had a great time at all the Naval Functions with you and Dale. We appreciate your continued friendship.
Stay well.

To the family of Dale,
I had the pleasure to work with Dale for so many years at Toledo Scale and then Mettler Toledo. He was the consummate professional and never said a bad thing about our company or the people that worked in it. I was proud to have Dale represent our company.
I also knew just how committed he was to his family. My sincerest sympathies to all of you as we mourn the loss of such a wonderful man.

I remember Dale as an integral part of helo detachment aboard USS John F.Kennedy during our involvement in the Black September deployment in 1970. I was attached to one of the Attack Squadrons and always preferre seeing Dale's smiling face on the flight deck rather than looking up from the water.
Dale was one of the good guys and his heroism during Hurricane Agnes in 1972 rescuing people from Wilkes Barre, PA.; my home town, was just another example of the kind of man, pilot and hero Dale was.
His life of service is reflective of the man.

Dale was a true gentleman and a great officer and pilot. He was a favorite of the enlisted Aircrew not only because of his excellent flying skills but because of the way he treated us all. The true measure of an officer is how he is viewed by those below him. Dale was a 10. May God bless him and his family. Heaven got a good one.

To Mickey and your family, my condolences and prayers for the repose of Dale's soul.
Having served with him in HC-2 and HS-75 I found him to be an incredibly caring and warm individual. He always came to everyone with a ready, smile and a warm welcoming attitude...all who met him became friends and compatriots.
His noted dedication to our country is more than evident. He is in my opinion a true hero and patriot.
I consider it a distinct honor to have known and served with someone of his caliber...and knowing him and serving with him has given me a 'role model' for my endeavors both in the military and civilian life.
He will be sorely missed by all...the US and the World were a better place because of him.

One of our great memories of HC-2 was the incredible joy of their wedding and all the fun associated with the Sokel family! We will miss Dale with every day that passes and hold his family in our prayers. God loves the funny and the dedicated so we know he holds Dale close bye.

Dale will be remembered by us as a smiling, gracious friend. He visited us when we were building our NH house and took the time to interview the farm matriarch down the street with whom we'd been friends since childhood. He was able, with his easy going manor, to elicit personal information that even we were unaware of. His closest friend and family will certainly miss him the most. We will cherish our own memories of him. RIP my friend and enjoy your new calling as God's servant.
