It was only today that I finally had time to watch the first part of the May Day Virtual Step Sing in which there was a tribute to Nick. My Bryn Mawr mentor is gone.
I was a member of the first group to spend a summer in Florence with him, just after I graduated in 1979. I remember walking around the back alleys of Florence with him on the first or second day, and he pointed out a balcony that Dante had spoken from. His enthusiasm and exuberance at showing it too us will always live with me.
It was Nick I went to senior year when I was overwhelmed by doing something no Bryn Mawrter should ever do: I was taking Italian literature, English literature, senior philosophy seminar, some other philosophy course, and auditing Modern Art all in the first semester. I was totally miserable trying to keep my head above water. I remember walking up to Nick at Doughnut Hour in the Great Hall, and just saying, it will get better, won't it? Nick Patruno held me together.
I only saw Nick a few times after we returned from Florence, probably at my fifth and tenth reunions, and I remember one lunch with Nick and Edwina in a restaurant at some point. My dad met him, and, being from New York, would talk endlessly with Nick about the New York Yankees.
I cannot convey how much I will miss Nick. He was my rock during some of my most formative years. I regret deeply that I did not visit with him more recently. RIP, Nick Patruno

Sincerest condolences for the loss of Dr. Nicholas Patruno. As a student of his many years ago at Bryn Mawr College, I would like to pay tribute to him by sharing some memories. He was a dedicated professor and insightful scholar. His love for everything Italian and his innate enthusiasm made him an exceptional teacher. He skillfully unlocked the works of great Italian writers and poets for all his students. He was immensely generous with his time and tirelessly encouraged everyone. His outgoing personality made the Tavola Italiana the place to be. Professor Patruno, Nick, brought two worlds together and indelibly enriched both. Truly unforgettable. Grande. Unico. Amarcord Whitney Ehrler, Bryn Mawr College Italian Major ‘88
