Obituary of Joseph I. Harkins, Sr.

Joseph I. Harkins, Sr.        

 

Joseph I. Harkins, Sr., lovingly known as ‘Grumpy’ to his grandchildren and great grandchildren, 95, of Audubon, PA passed away Wednesday, May 19, 2021. 

He was born in Conshohocken, Pa on May 18, 1926, the son of the late Dr. Malcolm J. and the late Vera M. (Connor) Harkins.

Joe has been living at Shannondell in Audubon for over a year, formerly of East Norriton and Conshohocken where he was born and raised.

He was a member of St. Titus RC Church of East Norriton, Pa.

Joe served in the Army during World War II, where he received the World War II Victory Medal.  He was a member of Norristown V.F.W. Post 1804, Jeffersonville American Legion Post 901 and the Catholic War Veterans. He worked with Connelly Container. 

 

He was the husband of Rita M. (Lavan) Harkins. 

Survivors include Wife, Rita Harkins of Audubon, Pa., Son, Malcolm J. (& Maura J. McDonnell) Harkins, III of Arnold, Md, Son, Joseph I. "Joby" (& Cornota) Harkins, Jr. of Drexel Hill, Pa, Daughter, Marybeth E. (& Scott) Daniels of Cambridge, MD. Daughter in law Michelina Harkins of Port Charlotte, Fl.  Joe is also survived by 14 grandchildren and 17 great grandchildren.

 

Along with his parents, Joseph was preceded in death by 3 sons, Thomas G. Harkins, Patrick T. Harkins and John E. Harkins, Sr., his brothers, Malcolm J. Harkins, Jr., Francis J. Harkins and James M. Harkins, and his sister, Alice V. Harkins.

 

His Memorial Mass will be held Thursday, May 27, 2021, at 11:00 AM from St. Titus RC Church, 3006 Keenwood Road, East Norriton, PA.

Friends may call on Thursday, May 27, 2021 from 10:00 AM to 10:45 AM at the church.

 

Interment will follow in St. Matthew's Cemetery, Conshohocken, Pa.

 

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Joe’s/Grump’s memory to the Shannondell assisted living employee appreciation fund. Checks should be made out to: “Meadows Management Inc.” and “staff appreciation” should be written on the front of the check. Contributions should be sent to the attention of Heather Stube, Executive Director, The Meadows, 6000 Shannondell Drive, Audubon, Pa. 19403.
