Obituary of Alice Anne Smith

Alice Anne Smith, “Sis”, age 96, of Frederick, PA passed away on Monday, August 16, 2021 at Frederick Living. 

She was born in Norristown, PA on October 17, 1924, the daughter of the late Ervin Groff and the late Emma Keplinger. 

Sis was a graduate of Norristown High School, Class of 1942.  She enlisted in the Army and served from January 8, 1945 to February 16, 1948 during World War II as a Physiotherapist and a Clerk-Typist stationed at Murphy General Hospital in Waltham, Mass.  She was awarded the American Campaign Medal, World War II Victory Medal, and Good Conduct Medal for her service. 

Sis worked for the J.F. Spillane Store of Jeffersonville and Royersford.  She began with the Montgomery County Historical Society in 1960, retiring as the Head Librarian.  She became an Annual Member of the Genealogical Society of Pennsylvania in November 1973, completed a course in Genealogical Methods in 1973-74, and on April 29, 1984 was recognized by the Montgomery County Federation of Historical Societies and Bicentennial Committee for her work.    

Sis volunteered as a Mont Clare Brownie Troop Leader, Lower Perkiomen Lassie League Coach, and as an active member of Green Tree Church in 1985 she transcribed the tombstones in the Green Tree Church of the Brethren Cemetery. 

She was the wife of the late William H. Smith, Sr. 

She is survived by her son, William Henry (& Patricia) Smith, Jr. of  Pottstown; 

daughter, Priscilla Anne (& Tim) Souder of Morehead City, NC; 

daughter, Susan Alice Smith of Zionsville, PA;  

daughter, Sarah Jane (& David) Hendricks of Royersford, PA;  

son, Thomas Richard (& Cheri) Smith of Palmerton, PA;  

as well as 13 grandchildren, 21 great grandchildren, and two great-great grandchildren.   

Her Funeral Service will be held on Tuesday, August 24, 2021 at 11:00 AM in the Green Tree Church of the Brethren, 1078 Egypt Road, Oaks, PA 19456.  Relatives and friends are invited to the visitation on Tuesday morning from 10:00 AM to 10:45 AM at the Church.  

Interment will take place in Green Tree Church of the Brethren Cemetery.    

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Green Tree Church of the Brethren, 1078 Egypt Road, PO Box 874, Oaks, PA 19456.
