My brothers and I were all under 10 years old the few times we visited Nana Reid on Gallagher Road with our parents. Butch would take us under his wing like a big brother. I remember him showing us grape vines he tended outside the kitchen back door. He either showed us or warned us away from a fresh water spring in a cave that he said was inhabited by snakes. I am not sure whether he was worried so much about us as he was about his own self. Of course, telling us not to go near was like an invitation. He found us there and let us have it for disobeying him. I recall seeing him on each visit walking his bike up a hill in front of their house and across a highway to get to his job when he was still a teenager. What I remember most of all was the Lionel train display he put up each Christmas that took up most of the living room. We absolutely loved his trains but of course he had to be there and run the trains himself for us. He demanded with his words and by his example that we be good people and measure up to the standards he internalized for his own self. Remote but good memories. Bob Ganse
