Al was my cousin on my fathers side. My first memories were of he & Sylvia at one of their first vacation rentals in Ocean City. My Aunt Merle brought me & my brother to visit in the early 60s. Al,David & Jeffrey were very young then. These visits with the Erb family in Ocean City started my yearly tradition of coming to OC each summer first bringing my son, now bringing my grandchildren. They look forward to it each summer. I visited Al & Sylvia once while in OC I the past 5 years. He will be missed.
On a separate note, I informed our cousin Norbeth Hanson in Sweden of Al’s passing. She will pass along to Lisbeth.

Mr Erb became my principal when he was at Black Horse Elementary. I attended 1956-1963. Both my parents, Eddie and Edith Volpe worked with him in different schools. My mom was a school cook at Black Horse, and my dad a carpenter at Plymouth Consolidated. I remember him coming to our house a few times in the early 1960’s. Both my parents are still with us and send their condolences.

I was so lucky to have Mr.Erb as my principal when I attended Lafayette and then Whitemarsh elementary schools. I started at a different school for first grade and I was very unhappy. My mom, a high school English teacher, was considering moving me and met with Mr. Erb and was so impressed that she allowed me to change schools. From second to fourth grade I loved Lafayette and was crushed when it closed. I’m forever grateful to Mr. Erb for his role in my happy elementary years.

My mother worked with Mr. Erb at Whitemarsh Elementary from 1979-1989. She spied a Family Circus cartoon once that used the name Al Erb in it. She wrote a letter to Bil Keane and he sent the original pencil drawing to her that she gave to Mr. Erb, framed for his office wall.
He was an outstanding principal and even better man....!
Five years ago, he and his wife unexpectedly appeared in my local FREE paper around Valentines Day with the text answering their secret to long lasting love.
Condolences to Mrs. Erb and the entire family...!!!

As a student of Whitemarsh Elementary in the late 1970s, I appreciated how Mr. Erb made a point of learning everyone’s name. We knew that he expected our best behavior because he wanted us to be successful and happy. He certainly touched many, many lives.

My most sincere condolences are sent to the entire Erb family. Mr. Erb was my first principal. I will always be grateful for his advice and encouragement along the way. He was so personable and made all his staff feel valued. Mr. Erb had a great sense of humor and he created a true family environment. His funny sense of humor was much appreciated. I can still picture the twinkle in his eyes and hear the enthusiasm in his voice. What an amazing legacy!

Mr. Erb had such a big presence on Saint Charles Place in Ocean City. He made it feel like a community with his warm and sincere greeting every time I walked by his porch on the way to the beach. His greeting would set the stage for a good day at the beach! He will be very much missed. Hoping that his family's sadness will shift to warm memories quickly!

I'm so sorry to hear this news. Condolences to Mr. Erb's family. He was my principal at Whitemarsh Elementary in the 1970's and was always visible and present. I reached out to him when I was considering becoming a teacher. He took time to speak with me and guide me and I'll always appreciate that.

Mr Erb was my Principal at Black Horse Elementary from 1-3 then at Ridge Park. Always a class guy and great roll model. If I ran into him outside of school, at the Mall or shopping I was always amazed that he remembered my name. He made it a point to say hello and ask how my parents were doing. A different time. Rest in Peace Mr Erb !

Mr. Erb was my principal at Lafayette Consolidated Elementary School. That building has since been repurposed. I have such fond memories of my encounters with him. During my time at the school I faced many challenges. He was so patient with this little girl who struggled in school. He showed great kindness as well. When I was called into the principal's office, I always felt that he was going to help me and I never felt scared. It was because of Mr. Erb’s wonderful demeanor and support that I decided to become an Educator. I recall in third grade, I was in his office crying because I could not read like the other kids. He told me, that one day I will read fluently and I will enjoy it. I believed him! I now hold a Master's Degree in Education and am a certified Reading Specialist. Thanks to Mr. Erb.

I have many memories of Mr. Erb. Not only was he my School Principal at Whitemarsh he was also a neighbor and friend. We used to play in the back yard at the Erb's house when we were kids. And when I started my career at Colonial Mr. Erb was still working for the district. We had many wonderful conversations over those few years he was still working there. I enjoyed running into him. He was a wonderful person.

My thoughts and prayers are with you, Sylvia, your grandson David (whom I taught at Ridge Park) and the entire Erb family.
I had the privilege of having Al as a principal at Ridge Park and again at Whitemarsh Elementary.
He was dedicated, exuberant, caring and never forgot a face or name. He, Jim B and Bill W. together were a force to be reckoned with.
I remember having snacks at your home after Gary Fultz’s class performed for a conference in 1965 or 66 and I have kept all of your handmade Christmas cards.
I’m sorry to say, ”This is the end of an era in education.”
Love,
Jeanneane Monteleone Bozzelli

To all the members of the Erb Family! Mr. Erb will always be remembered as one of the best principals. We were a Whitemarsh family who got to experience his exuberant personality, professionalism, and love of children. As a new parent to the school, I was shocked when he welcomed me by my name. I think that was his claim to fame that he recognized all the parents and was able to welcome them by name. He was truly a gem. Later, as a teacher I got to work with him at CMS when he was our interim principal. It was so great to know him on different levels and see his wonderful smile once again. Annette Swartz

To all the Erbs,
Sending love and prayers during this difficult time. My favorite memories of Mr. Erb was seeing him, on his front porch in Ocean City, in a heated card game with friends on my walk to the beach. Then at the magical hour he’s pop down to the beach for some more action.
Mr. Erb was one of my first professional references when I graduated college to become a teacher. He was so respected in the field of education that I know he had something to do with my jobs in the Council Rock and Lower Merion School Districts. Thank you.
May God’s love comfort all of you.
Warmly.
