Washington Atlee Burpee IV, what a regal name. I grew up knowing him as Widge. He was born in January, 1957, I was born in August. I have known him as a brother from a different mother nearly since birth. As kids we explored the greatest reaches of the nearly 600 acre Burpee farm. Atlee lived on the Warden portion, I on the Fordhook part. Before Atlee was born, the word extreme hadn't even been invented. We climbed the ancient hand hewn rafters in the Warden barn, jumped off into the hay and built hay forts. Atlee was probably the best tree climber I ever knew. Behind our house was a several hundred year old Copper Beech that towered over the large three story home. Not satisfied with merely climbing the tree Atlee insisted I clock him with the stopwatch to ensure he'd always better his previous time reaching the top. From that crow's nest vantage point we could view a huge portion of Fordhook including the iconic seed house and parts of Delaware Valley College. If you were going to hang with Widge, you had better bring your "A" game. Cuts, bruises and stitches were all parts of the rites of passage. Walking, running, riding bikes for miles until we graduated to mini-bikes and motorcycles. We shared epic adventures up at Watkins Glen, New York, Lime Rock, Connecticut, Bridgehampton, Long Island and Laguna Seca, California attending races for years. In a world where many only get one shot, Atlee devoured every day, he lived nine lives before the age of 16. He cherished his family beyond belief, and we cherish every magical moment spent in his company. Never stop reaching for the stars.

Mark,
Your tribute to Widge, portrays him so well. I worked with Atlee at Burpee Seed in Warminster and for your father. Once I told Atlee that I do everything, but in moderation. He replied that you have not really done anything until you do it to the extreme. He was a wonderful man and will be missed.

I had the good fortune of meeting Atlee for the 1st time at this years Mid-Atlantic Fruit & Vegetable Growers Conference. Having a similar age we shared some of experiences including the "old" varieties his Grandfather's company produced. A few day later I even shared a picture of one of my sign collection.. As I was looking forward to other conversations I must say I do miss him!

We are deeply saddened to learn of Atlee’s passing. We have nothing but great memories of his contributions to Abbott & Cobb and to the vegetable seed industry and grower customers whom he served. We distinctly remember how he spent 4 hours in the kitchen of a prominent south Jersey grower, in order to book his order. Total dedication. We will sincerely miss him and our deepest condolences to all of his family. Art and Nancy Abbott

I have been in the seed industry now for 43 years. I have known Atlee for almost that long. Our paths have crossed many times. As a supplier now and at one time even a competitor. I have dined out with him and stood under the July sun with him for long evaluations in the field. I can say without reservation that he was the most professional and good natured a person as anyone could ever meet. He was serious but had a great sense of humor, and understood what he knew and what he did not know, and had the wisdom to know the difference. He will be missed very much by all who ever had the pleasure of his company. Bryan Hannigan Stokes Seed Co

My friend's 'senior page' from the Cate School yearbook a.k.a.
"The Mesan." In October 2021, I asked for Widge's permission to
post this on an alumni FB page, and he happily and readily gave
it.
His two choices seen here for his two 'senior quotes' reveal a
young, observant, thoughtful, humble, erudite, and keenly
developing mind at 18.
As a teenager, he could be very self-disciplined too (in my humble
opinion). An excellent role model for younger students and a very
positive 'image-sustainer' for a small community, ivory-tower, all-
boys, boarding school in the early 70s.
I am 100% certain Widge will be greatly missed by all of his
'long ago' classmates and friends -- young lads who have now
collectively grown into very old boys, remembering. ALK

I went to Cate School in Carpinteria, CA. Widge was one year ahead of me at Cate. He was naturally friendly and a very balanced, nice guy growing up in the 70s in an all-boys prep school. I still clearly recall that many (if not nearly all) of his Cate teammates, classmates, schoolmates, coaches, teachers, and school staff often thought highly of Widge -- and they repeatedly said so too. He was a model scholar-athlete for his time on the Mesa. I only knew "one" Widge Atlee Burpee so imagine both our "simultaneous surprises" when I told him I saw a picture of him (with his name) when he was 6 or 7 years old on one of Garrison Keillor's liner notes inside one of his Lake Woebegone CDs. We both shared a few fond memories of what made us happy and glad to look back through the arches of the years. Servons (our school motto) and in His service my friend, Arden L. Atlee was my cousin. I am older than him but I was in awe of his many accomplishments especially the races he ran. My wife and I cheered him on at the New York Marathon. As I think about Atlee one word keeps coming up in my mind : KIND.
I don't think I ever heard him say a bad word about anyone. The other thing I remember is the sparkle in his eyes and his smile which was always there. Yes : KIND.
He was humble, understated and loved his Family. He helped me plan a large Family reunion.
It was Atlee who every Christmas placed the Wreaths on all of the Family Graves at the Church of the Redeemer.
God Bless him.
Rest in Peace Atlee.
Thank you for blessing our lives.
